The 115th Field Artillery Brigade unit patch, officially called a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia - Military Operations in Hostile Conditions (SSI-MOHC), was approved in 1988, exactly one century after the unit’s original inception in 1888 as the 1st Regiment in the Wyoming National Guard. The design of the color version of the 115th Field Artillery Brigade patch is also employed for its its Combat Service Identification Badge (CSIB), which was created for wear on the Army Service Uniform. Originally, the patch was worn on the sleeves of the Army Green Uniform, but its wear was discontinued when that uniform was replaced by the blue ASU. Today, the patch is worn on the Army Green Service Uniform, or AGSU.
In addition to the color version , the patch also comes in two subdued versions, based upon camouflage patterns, for wear on the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) and other utility uniforms. The current camouflaged, Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP), completely replaced the Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) introduced around 2004.
The colors of scarlet and gold present here are the traditional colors of unit associated with Field Artillery. Red also represents military strength in heraldry. The sun in the background has multiple meanings for the 115th Field Artillery Brigade. The sun is a symbol of excellence and glory, appropriate for the 115th, as it has earned those qualities in 11 campaigns, 4 wars— the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, both World Wars— and over a century of service. It also gives the allusion of an artillery shell exploding, referring to the unit’s designation. Lastly, it also is a depiction of the beauty of the country of Wyoming, the unit’s home and place of origin. The bucking horse and its rider is another allusion to the state of Wyoming, signifying the determination, spirit, and heritage present in the men of the Wyoming Army National Guard. The horse itself is a symbol of the unit’s readiness to serve its country.
