The 167th Theater Sustainment Command can trace its origins to the days following World War I and the constitution of Company M in the 167th Infantry Regiment in the 39th Division in 1921 and was quickly redesignated Company M, 167th Infantry. It was relieved of duty from the 39th in 1923 and transferred to the 31st Division (later the 31st Infantry Division). During World War II, the unit was awarded credit for participation in two campaigns and received an Arrowhead for taking part in an assault landing for one of them (New Guinea).
It wasn’t until 1968 that the unit was designated as a Support organization by consolidating the 1st Brigade, 31st Infantry Division with 152nd Engineer Group and the 143rd Quartermaster Group to form the 167th Support Brigade. In 1976, the Brigade was upgraded to 167th Support Command, then in 2006 was redesignated to the unusual configuration of Headquarters and Special Troops Battalion, 167th Sustainment Command. It is not clear when the unit was redesignated as Theater Sustainment Command.
Today, the Command is located at Fort McClellan, Alabama and is assigned to the Army Service Component Command of United States Northern Command.
