Authorized for wear on 9 October 1987 until the unit was inactivated in 2006, the color version of the 18th Aviation Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia—often called a unit patch—features an arced rectangle with a field of ultramarine blue and a golden orange border (official Army Aviation colors).
A pair of wings symbolizes the aeronautical capabilities of the “Black Barons,” and the white quarrel (a bolt for a crossbow) stands for the unit’s quick-strike capabilities. From 2003 to 2006, personnel assigned to the 18th Aviation Brigade were authorized to wear the Airborne tab with this insignia as the tab is considered an integral part of the insignia itself. This same insignia, both with and without the Airborne tab, is available as a Combat Service ID Badge for wear on the Army Service Uniform.
