The 193rd Infantry Brigade might well be the only one of the several Infantry brigades constituted in the Organized Reserves in June 1921 that deployed for combat in a conflict other than World War II. In the vast majority of cases, these Brigades were (a) redesignated as Reconnaissance Troops, Mechanized as an element of an Infantry Division; (b) redesignated under their original numerical brigade designation in 1962 or 1963; and (c) not activated again until the late 1990s/early 2000s and assigned missions involving training.
For the 193rd Infantry Brigade, its service in World War II while designated the 97th Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized—for which it earned a campaign streamer for Central Europe—was followed by its 1962 conversion, redesignation, and activation as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 193rd Infantry Brigade in the Panama Canal Zone. In December 1989, the Brigade took part in Operation Just Cause that led to the arrest of Manual Noriega and was awarded an Armed Forces Expedition streamer. Four years later, in 1994, the Brigade was inactivated, and would remain so until 31 January 2007 when it was reactivated at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.
Today, the Brigade renowned for its motto of “No Ground To Give” is stationed at Fort Jackson, where it continues to guide newly arriving Soldiers through Basic Combat Training.
