The 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade unit patch, officially called a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, was originally approved for wear on 29 April 1987 while the unit was designated the 201st Military Intelligence Brigade. That brigade had been formed through the consolidation of the 503rd Army Security Agency Group and the 201st Military Intelligence Department, with the brigade inheriting the lineage and history of both units. On 3 July 2008, the Brigade was redesignated first as the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade and then the 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade. It is currently headquartered at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
On the 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade patch, a shield divided into oriental blue and silver gray—branch colors for Military Intelligence—invokes the two-steps involved in utilizing intelligence, acquisition and processing. An upright sword superimposed on both the blue and gray fields emphasizes the inherent danger and aggressiveness involved in military operations, and two lighting flashes symbolize the electronic warfare technologies used “With Courage And Vision” by Military Intelligence personnel.
