The 21st Theater Sustainment Command Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, often called a unit patch, was originally approved for 1st Support Brigade on 11 February 1966; it has been redesignated for each new designation the unit has received since that time. In the center of a shield is a millrind, an iron reinforcement found in the center of a millstone that supports it as it rotates on an axle to grind wheat, grain, or corn. Teal is used as the color because Sustainment is branch immaterial.
In 2007, the 21st Theater Support Command was redesignated as the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and given a much more expanded mission. The Command is the head organization for all activities and missions that constitute Sustainment—transportation, logistics support, human resources, combat replenishment, finance, contracting, to name some of the most recognizable. Military Police, Medical, and Sustainment Brigades look to the 21st TSC as their responsible headquarters. And 21st TSC provides this oversight and support not only for Army units in Europe, but also for those serving under U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Central Command.
