The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade was approved on 6 April 1981, while the unit was still designated as the 228th Signal Brigade. Formed in 1907 in the South Carolina National Guard as an Infantry unit—informally called the “Hampton Guards,” but formally designated as Company I, 1st Regiment of Infantry—the Brigade was designated as an Infantry or Quartermaster until it was consolidated with a Signal Corps unit in 1968.
This mix of service is reflected in the design of the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade unit patch. In the colored version of the patch, the Infantry colors of blue and white are featured prominently in the arced rectangle, but these yield to orange and white—Signal Corps colors—in the center of the insignia. A bayonet recalls the many years the Brigade served as Infantry, while the crescent is taken from the state flag of the home state of South Carolina; orange lightning flashes on the crescent recall electronic equipment and the unit motto, “Strength In Electronics.”
