In January 2006, the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 196th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) was combined with the 230th Area Support Group and redesignated as the 230th Sustainment Brigade. At the federal level, the 196th FAB was converted and federally redesignated as the 240th Sustainment Brigade on 1 September 2008. The newly formed unit inherited the 196th’s lineage dating back to the organization of the 4th Infantry Regiment, which was federally recognized in the Tennessee National Guard at Chattanooga as the Howitzer Company, 4th Infantry in 1918.
A little over a year after the 230th Sustainment Brigade was established in the Tennessee ARNG, its Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was approved for wear. The buff border combined with the red field represent the colors associated with Sustainment units, and the red-white-blue combination is a nod to the flags of both the U.S. and Tennessee. A white chevron is a longtime symbol of support in heraldry, and the three stars stand for the state of Tennessee’s three grand divisions.
ed and buff are the colors traditionally used by Sustainment units. Red, white, and blue are the national colors and also the colors of the Tennessee State Flag. The chevron suggests support, the mission of the Brigade. The sword, pointing up, symbolizes military readiness. The three stars allude to the three grand divisions of the state of Tennessee.
