The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (unit patch) of the 244th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade (ECAB) was approved on 1 August 1995, two months prior to the unit’s redesignation from 244th Aviation Group to 244th Aviation Brigade. In the nearly quarter-century since then, the Brigade has been redesignated as a Theater Aviation Brigade and most recently an Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade.
The 244th ECAB became a component of the original 11th Theater Aviation Command when the command activated Sept. 16, 2007. It was relocated from Fort Sheridan in Illinois to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey a year later, and its headquarters remain there today. The unit motto, "Wings Of The Hawk," is very appropriate for the unit's role in combat aviation.
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the branch colors of Army Aviation and are featured prominently on the color version of the 244th ECAB unit patch. A combination compass rose and polestar is a symbol of guidance and leadership, while the hawk is an emblem of vigilance and striking power.
