Since its formation as the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons in 1836, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment has served under eleven different designations, not acquiring its current title until March 2005—only to be redesignated as the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment in June 2006 and then reverted back to simply 2nd Cavalry Regiment in July 2011. Fortunately, the unit nickname (officially recognized as a Special Designation) is quite easy to remember: Second Dragoons.
The 2nd Cavalry Regiment Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, recalls the unit’s origins with a yellow eight-pointed worn by Dragoons, and a green palmetto leaf is a symbol recalling the Regiment’s first combat against the Seminole Indians in Florida. A fleur-de-lis represents service in France in both World Wars, and the motto of “Toujours Prêt” (Always Ready) is a time-tested affirmation of the Regiment’s preparedness and fighting spirit.
