Originally constituted and organized in 1988, the 300th Military Brigade (Linguistics) is an element in the Utah Army National Guard with six battalions under its command and control. It is a subordinate unit of the U.S. army’s Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) and is headquartered at Draper, Utah. Its motto is “Excellence In Language.”
The 300th Military Intelligence Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was originally approved on 1 December 1988, the same year that the unit was established from the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion. Its predominant colors are oriental blue and silver gray, branch colors of the Army’s Military Intelligence Corps since its foundation in 1962 as the Army Intelligence and Security Branch.
Four highly stylized, inward-pointing arrows positioned on the primary points of the compass (North, South, East, West) symbolize the collection and processing of information from all over the globe; they also form a saltire in the blue background, and saltires are a traditional symbol Of support. A crossed quill and dagger refer to the unit’s study of languages (it analyzes 19 documented languages) and the covert and military aspects of the Brigade’s work, respectively.
