The 308th Civil Affairs Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, often called a unit patch, was first worn on 3 February 1993, nearly 44 years after the unit’s genesis as the 308th Military Government Group in the Organized Reserves and its activation in Chicago, Illinois on 24 March 1949. Over the next four decades, the unit was redesignated twice; it did not become a Civil Affairs Brigade until 16 September 1992. As of 2019, the Brigade is located in Homewood, Illinois, with subordinate battalions based in Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
The Brigade’s unit patch is an arced rectangle with a golden border and upraised sword set against a purple-and-white background. Three sections of the background represent the transition from conflict to peace through the Brigade’s efforts to “Advise Organize Direct” (per the unit motto); the upraised sword denotes the Brigade’s mission of defending and ensuring peace. Gold throughout the insignia signifies excellence and achievement in the Brigade’s history.
