Headquartered at Fort Leonard Wood as part of the Missouri Army National Guard, the 35th Engineer Brigade was originally organized on 17 July 1928 in the 35th Division of the Missouri National Guard as Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 138th Infantry. It received its current designation until 1968 when it was consolidated with the 1135th Ordnance Company, but for the next sixteen years it would wear the insignia of the 35th Infantry Division.
On 19 January 1984, the 35th Engineer Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignias, or unit patch, was approved for wear, with a design that was heavily influenced by the insignia of the 35th Infantry Division. The color version, currently authorized for wear with the Army Green Service Uniform and the discontinued (since October 2015) Army Green Uniform, is rendered in scarlet and white, the branch colors of the Corps of Engineers. Crenellations along the scarlet circle are an allusion to the mission of the Brigade; they are taken from the design of embattled walls and stand for construction and defense. The white cross and circle, called an annulet in heraldry, are taken from the 35th Infantry Division insignia.
