Inactivated on 15 September 2007 as a result of the modular reorganization of the Army, the 455th Chemical Brigade is slated for reactivation at some point in November 2019. The decision to reactivate was due in part to the Brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment’s 2003-2004 deployment in Iraq, where it was originally tasked with eliminating Iraqi weapons of mass destruction; it also provided escort security for convoys and decontamination support for teams searching for WMDs. Upon activation in Sloan, Nevada, the Brigade will serve under the 76th Operational Response Command and, as it has done since its original formation as a motorized chemical battalion in World War II, its ultimate focus will be on “Protecting The Force.”
The 455th Chemical Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was approved on 25 August 1999. A dragon is a common image seen on the heraldry of Chemical Corps units because it symbolizes the fire and destruction associated with chemical warfare. The Chemical Corps branch colors of cobalt blue and yellow are used for the insignia border and field, respectively.
