U.S. ARMY 470TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

“Truth Security Loyalty,” longtime motto of the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade, forms the foundation of the Brigade’s Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or a unit crest, that was approved on 5 December 1969. It features a downward-pointing key, a symbol of secrecy and authority, as a reference to the Brigade’s mission. The key is double-warded (it has projections on two sides that must fit a lock) to reflect the functions of intelligence and counterintelligence.

At the top of the key is a seven-rayed bow, a reference to the number that symbolizes the “revealing light” of security and wisdom. The key and bow are placed upon a red flame emanating from a blue a blue torch; blue represents truth and red stands for courage and zeal.

As of Autumn 2023, the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade is headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. It addition to its Headquarters and Headquarters Company, it consists of three Military Intelligence Battalions (the 312th, 377th, and the 717th) and the 403rd Military Intelligence Detachment.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
