The 4th Medical Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was approved for wear in December 1989, not quite a year-and-a-half after its redesignation and reactivation following 38-year period of inactivation after being relieved from assignment to the Third Army. As the 4th Auxiliary Surgical Group, the Brigade had served in World War II and took part in five European campaigns, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation while living up to its motto, “Forward And Ready.”
Maroon and white, the colors of the Army’s Medical Corps, are used to divide the shield into four quadrants, reflecting the numerical designation of the Brigade. Four divisions is also a reference to the four main compass points and reflect the worldwide scope of the Brigade’s mission. Inward-pointing chevrons form a cross in the middle of the shield, representing medical care, and the counter-charged colors reflect the brigade’s medical mission being integrated into the total Army.
