The 513th Military Intelligence Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was approved on 20 November 1986. In the color version, its quartered field of oriental blue and silver gray, branch colors of Military Intelligence, represents the four main Intelligence functions: the collection, analysis, production, and dissemination of Intelligence information. Behind a silver knight’s helmet are a crossed sword and a lightning bolt; the lightning alludesto the worldwide electronic warfare functions of the Brigade, and the denotes the aggressiveness and physical danger inherent in Military Intelligence operations.
A silver helmet recalls the unit’s origins at Camp King in Oberursel, Germany, and its orientation (front-facing) indicates a state of readiness and vigilance and thus recalling the unit motto of PER VIGILANTIAM SCIENTIA, Latin for “Knowledge Through Vigilance.”
The closed face-plate, on the other hand, suggests the anonymity involved in covert collection of Intelligence.
