Assigned to U.S. Army South and based at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since October 2004, the 525th Military Police Battalion provides is responsible for High Risk Detention Operations at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in support of the Joint Detention Group and Joint Task Force Guantanamo. It was originally constituted on 30 August 1944 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 158th Military Police Service Battalion and activated on 5 September 1944. It would take part in two campaigns in Burma and India before inactivation on 1 November 1945.
It was redesignated at the 525th Military Police Battalion and allotted to the Regular Army on 25 April 1949 and activated at Fort Sam Houston on 11 May 1949. The following year it was reorganized and redesignated as HHD, 525th Military Police Service Battalion and deployed to Korea, where it would take part in five campaigns and be awarded two Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations for service between 1950 and 1953. Inactivated while still in Korea in March 1953, the unit would not be activated again for nearly thirteen years, shortly after it was redesignated as HHD, 525th Military Police Battalion at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. It would serve a little over two years under that designation before entering a period of inactivation from July 1968 until October 2004 and its relocation to Guantanamo Bay.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 525th Military Police Battalion, also called a unit crest, was approved on 3 January 1967. Its green and gold hues are the official branch colors of the Military Police Corps; black is used to symbolize jurisprudence. A green scroll is an emblem of legal documentation and its written words, a reference to Military Police governing policies, administrative processes, and records and files. The knight’s helmet denotes honor, and its faced bars allude to custody, retention, and protection. “Vigilant Warrior!,” the 525th Military Police Battalion motto, is not used on its Distinctive Unit Insignia.Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
