Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 36th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 649th Military Intelligence Battalion (MIB), 49th Armored Division on 10 October 1996. When the 49th Armored Division was inactivated on 1 May 2004, the 649th MIB was reflagged as the 636th Military Intelligence Battalion and the insignia was redesignated for it.
Divided diagonally into oriental blue and silver gray areas (the two colors of Military Intelligence), the right section is charged with the head of a griffin, the mythical creature that embodies watchfulness, vigilance, and courage, qualities inherent in the unit’s motto and mission. The five-pointed star is a reference to the home state of Texas and its nickname, referenced in the unit motto, as the “Lone Star” state.
A black scroll containing the unit motto inscribed in white (silver) is an allusion to the night-and-day, 24-hour mission facing all Military Intelligence units.
The 636th Military Intelligence Battalion is a unit in the Texas Army National Guard (ARNG). As of Summer 2023, its Headquarters and Headquarters Company and three Companies are part of the Texas ARNG’s 71st Military Intelligence Brigade. The Battalion is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
