U.S. ARMY 79TH THEATER SUSTAINMENT COMMAND PATCH (SSI)

Given its current designation September 2017, the 79th Theater Sustainment Command's lineage goes back to 5 August 1917 and the constitution of the 79th Division in the National Army. Like a great many Army units formed at that time, the 79th Division was demobilized after returning from its World War I service in France before being reconstituted in the Organized Reserves, the 1920s-era equivalent of today’s Army Reserve.
It was during its time in France that the 79th Division acquired its nickname as the “Lorraine Division” (it’s official special designation is “Cross of Lorraine”) for its combat action in that area of France, earning streamers for the Meuse-Argonne and Lorraine 1918 campaigns.

During the Second World War it landed at Normandy in mid-June and ultimately took part in four European Theater Campaigns, earning two highly coveted French Croix de Guerre with Palms (one inscribed “Normandy To Paris” and the other “Parroy Forest”) and a Croix de Guerre Fourragere.

In 1946, it was allotted to the Organized Reserves, predecessor of the Army Reerve, and in 1963 it was reorganized and redesignated as the 79th Command Headquarters (Divisional). The insignia was redesignated for the 79th U.S. Army Reserve Command in the spring of 1968 and was subsequently redesignated for the U.S. Army Reserve Sustainment Support Command in 2009.
