Although all five branches of the Armed Forces of the United States share the same four-star insignia for General Officers in the O-10 grade, i.e., Admirals or Generals, three of them—the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard—call for the same size and configuration of the stars for wear on their respective Garrison Caps: 9/16” inch stars arrayed “point to point” and worn on the right side of the cap. These are the same size stars used as collar grade insignia in the three services.
Until 2001, both the Army and the Air Force included Garrison Caps as authorized headgear, but at that time Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki discontinued its wear and replaced it with the Black Beret, which previously was reserved for wear exclusively by Army Rangers. Before the Army Garrison Cap was eliminated, Officers wore their insignia of grade on the left-hand side of the cap, centered on the cap’s “curtain” an inch from the front crease. On the Air Force version of the Garrison Cap, the Flight Cap, insignia are worn so that the leading edge (closest to the front) is 1.5” from the cap’s front crease.
