In the United States Air Force, Sergeants in the Senior Noncommissioned Officer (SNCO) pay grades of E-7 to E-9 may be selected to serve in a special position called First Sergeant, a job designated reflected by the addition of a diamond to the standard insignia for that pay grade. For an E-7 First Sergeant, the insignia consists of two curved stripes at the bottom called “rockers,” three downward-pointing chevrons with circled star superimposed over them, a single upward-pointing chevron at the top, and the diamond in the blue field.
The E-7 First Sergeant metal rank insignia is worn primarily with outwear garments: the Blue Cardigan, White Cardigan, and Blue Pullover sweaters, as well as the Topcoat and the All-Weather Coat. On the sweaters, the insignia is attached 5/8 of an inch from the shoulder-sleeve seam with the base pointing toward the shoulder, and on the coats it is attached to the collars an inch from the bottom and parallel to the collar edges.
The E-7 First Sergeant Insignia is sometimes referred to as “Master Sergeant with Diamond.”
