The United States Air Force Honor Guard Ceremonial Cap has two chinstraps, an ornamental silver strap in the front and a functional black chinstrap in the rear. As a general rule, the black chinstrap is worn in the up position at all times (with the chrome buckle on the wearer’s right side of the Cap) unless its use is necessitated by gusty winds or other inclement weather.
But members of some Honor Guard missions (Drill Team, Colors, Flight-Line Cordon) always wear the chinstrap in the down position. When worn in the down position, the black chinstrap is adjusted to create a firm fit under the front of the chin, but it should not be tightened to the point that it pulls the crown of the Cap against the top of the head and causes a protrusion. The black leather hook is turned to an upright position when the chinstrap is being used.
