Although Air Force Security Forces personnel serving as gate guards wear the uniform of the day, installation commanders can authorize base entry controllers and Major Command elite guards to wear the Security Forces Dress Uniform or the Airman’s Battle Uniform. In either case, the Security Forces flash is worn on the blue beret worn with those (and all authorized uniforms worn in garrison), along with bloused boots (white laces or low quarters), white ascot, and nylon web gear or duty belt on the Dress Uniform and with the standard duty belt when wearing the ABU.
Aligned on the beret so that it is above the left eye when the beret is worn, the Security Forces flash is sewn to the center of the beret stiffener, one-quarter inch above and parallel to the headband. Enlisted Security Forces personnel wear the Security Forces flash with the Security Forces insignia, while Officers wear the plain flash with a nonsubdued metal rank insignia centered upon it.
Security Forces (SF) personnel are precluded from wearing organizational baseball caps (caps worn to identify Security Force patrols are permitted), and only SF personnel assigned to the Officer Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) 31PX or Enlisted AFSCs 3P0XX/A/B (this includes Military Working Dog Handlers and Combat Arms Training and Maintenance personnel) are authorized to wear the SF beret. SF berets are worn only by SF personnel assigned to officer Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) 31PX and enlisted AFSCs 3P0XX/A/B.
The Security Forces motto found on the flash, "Defensor Fortis," is Latin for "Defenders of the Force."
