U.S. NAVY CWO AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TECHNICIAN AC HARD SHOULDER BOARDS

Typically, one of the duties an Air Traffic Controller (AC) can be assigned during their second shore tour is Facility Watch Supervisor (FWS) at either a Naval Air Station (NAS), Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC), or at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Pensacola, Florida. To earn this assignment, however, the AC must have qualified on all the operating positions in the facility.

The responsibilities of Facility Watch Supervisor are numerous, varied, and detailed. Each shift begins with an equipment checkout and the reporting of any malfunctioning electronics to the appropriate maintenance personnel, along with a crew briefing after the watch turnover. The FWS prepares operating position assignments, ensuring that personnel are assigned duties for which they are currently qualified and documenting the accomplishment of training requirements.

During the shift, the FWS assumes responsibility for the use of proper procedures and techniques, and facilitates coordination not only amongst personnel at the facility, but also between facilities. Records are kept of complaints and comments regarding the services delivered and procedures employed by the facility, along with detailed records of mishaps or other incidents that are reported to the Air Traffic Control Facility officer. Last but certainly not least, the FWS is tasked with maintaining the facility’s physical security.
