The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by Arizona Army National Guard (ARNG) members serving in the state’s National Guard Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) was approved on 1 October 2003. Prior to that date, it had been designated for the HQ, State Area Command, Arizona Army National Guard since 5 August 1988, replacing another design that organization had worn since December 1983.
The background of the shield employs the design of the Arizona state flag, which is also used for the seal of the Arizona National Guard, with slightly different dimensions for the upper and lower portions so the bayonet is vertically centered while its hand guard is still flush with the top of the blue area. Crossed arrows are an Indian emblem for peace and allude to the organization’s home area and its heritage, while the bayonet signifies the unit’s dedication to defending the nation and its readiness to do so.
