The 1st Infantry Division Artillery Distinctive Unit Insignia reflects the unit’s origins as the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, which was constituted on 24 May 1917 and included the 6th and 7th Field Artillery Regiments. A winged centaur with a drawn bow is the crest on the coat of arms of the 6th Field Artillery Regiment; the 1st Infantry Division Artillery unit crest displays only the human portion of the mythical creature). Organization of the brigade was completed in France in August 1917, and before the war’s end the unit had earned credit for participation in seven campaigns during the First World War.
Disbanded in 1939, the Brigade was reconstituted in September 1940 as the HQ and HQ Battery, 1st Division Artillery (DIVARTY), and took part in both the North African and European invasion landings; it was honored with two French Croix de Guerre with Palm, a French Croix de Guerre fourragere, and a Belgian fourragere (two citations in the Orders of the Day of the Belgian Army). During the Vietnam War, the 1st DIVARTY was recognized for taking part in ten of the seventeen named campaigns of that conflict, and was the recipient of a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and a Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class.
Since 2001, 1st DIVARTY has been recognized for deployment in the Global War on Terrorism, and has also been credited with participation in two campaigns of Operation Iraqi Freedom: Iraqi Governance and National Resolution.
