U.S. ARMY 103RD FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

During its World War II service, the 103rd Field Artillery Brigade—then designated the 68th Field Artillery Brigade, 43rd Infantry Division—proved that its motto of “Fight To Win” was a creed it took seriously. In addition to taking part in four campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, the Division was awarded two Arrowheads for hitting the beaches in Assault Landings in the Northern Solomons and on Luzon, and was also the recipient of a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

The 103rd Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 8 December 1971 and celebrates the Brigade’s exemplary World War II service and its Rhode Island heritage. A cannon barrel top and center has the shape of an historic field piece denoting its Artillery pedigree, while a rectangle interrupting blue wavy lines at the bottom of the insignia simulates an island, a direct allusion to the Brigade’s “island-hopping” duties in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater (White, blue, and gold are also the state colors of Rhode Island).

A seven-pointed star in the middle of the triangle is taken from the Australian flag and refers to New Zealand and the Solomon Island, both of which are administered by Australia. The Brigade’s assault landings are represented by two Arrowheads bookending the cannon barrel, with two more stars representing the other campaigns the Brigade fought in. The blue waves, white star, and scarlet background are a reference to the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation the Brigade received after World War
II.
