The 108th Sustainment Brigade was formed through the reorganization and redesignation of the 33rd Area Support Group in February on 4 February 2006. Designed to execute state and Federal missions as needed, the Brigade comprises a Special Troops Battalion, Multifunctional Medical Battalion, Transportation Battalion, and a Combat Service Support Battalion. It is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
“SINE QUA NON,” the Latin phrase that describes an absolutely essential action or thing, is the unit motto used to describe the importance of the Brigade viz a viz the Illinois National Guard and its mission and is found on the 108th Sustainment Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit Crest. The letter “Y” in the center of the insignia represents the meeting point of the North Branch and Chicago rivers, a famous landmark in the Brigade’s HQ city of Chicago. Above the “Y,” resting on a grassy field placed atop a gold and blue wreath, is the blockhouse of the second Fort Dearborn (the first had been burned down by Potawatomi Indians during the War of 1812; the second one, built in 1816, was partially dismantled in 1851, seriously damaged by fire 1855, and was finally completely destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

On 2 September 2023, the 108th Sustainment Brigade became the 34th Division Sustainment Brigade (DSB), a change necessitated by a force design update by the Army National Guard to convert eight National Guard Sustainment Brigades to Division Sustainment Brigades. Operationally, the 34th DSB is aligned with the 34th Infantry Division, a National Guard division based in Minnesota. Although the 108th Sustainment Brigade is now the 34th DSB, the Soldiers assigned will retain their current unit patch and the unit will retain its motto, SINE QUA NON.
