The 109th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, AKA a DUI or a unit crest, was first approved for the 248th Aviation Battalion on 13 March 1969. It was rescinded just over a decade later, on 15 May 1979, but was reinstated and redesignated for the 109th Aviation Regiment. Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the official branch colors of Army Aviation and are prominently featured throughout the 109th Aviation Regiment DUI. Paying homage to the unit’s home state of Iowa—the Hawkeye State—is a hawkeye in the center; besides honoring the unit’s home state, the charge also alludes to vision, vigilance, dedication to purpose. The hawkeye rests on the center of a four-pointed star, a reference to the “four corners” of the globe and, in combo with the wings, a nod to the worldwide range of modern aviation assets.
The star is also a reference to the Croix de Guerre the unit’s predecessor organization was awarded, and the six tongues of flame reaching upward signify six World War II campaigns the Regiment has in its lineage. “Safely On Time” is the Regimental motto.
The 109th Aviation Regiment was part of the Iowa Army National Guard, but there are no indications that any of the Regiment's are active as of 2023. We encourage readers with any information regarding the 109th Aviation Regiment to
