The Distinctive Unit Insignia for the 10th Mountain Division is replete with symbolism. In the background, a white mountain symbolizes the unit’s combat in the Northern Apennines in Italy, as well as lofty, noble aspirations; the blue wave denotes the waters of the Po River. Crossed swords historically indicate combat, but here they also form the Roman numeral X for the division’s numerical designation; their scarlet color represents both danger and the courage required to face it. (The same crossed swords are found in the unit’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI), or unit patch. Appropriately, the motto “Climb to Glory” is found at the top, or peak, of the insignia.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
