“Often Tested, Never Bested” is the unit motto of the 1140th Engineer Battalion, a Missouri Army National Guard assigned to the 35th Engineer Brigade and based in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. In 2004, the Battalion deployed to Iraq to provide support of the 115th Engineer Group and the 420th Engineer Brigade and in 2007 was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service between 22 February 2004 and 1 November 2004, particularly for its role in providing superior mobility, counter-mobility, and general engineering support throughout the southern portion of Iraq.
The 1140th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly called a “unit crest” or a DUI by Soldiers, features a pair of crossed axes—a standard wood axe and a battle axe—to emphasize its dual role as a Combat Engineer Battalion. Below the axes are embattlements that recall the Engineer function of erecting defenses, and below it a blue, wavy line represents the Mississippi River, located just two-and-a-half miles from the Missouri Army National Guard Armory in Cape Girardeau.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
