U.S. ARMY 122ND SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 122nd Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for the 3rd Armored Division Maintenance Battalion on 28 September 1942. It was redesignated for the 122nd Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion in December 1949, then for the 122d Ordnance Battalion on 15 July 1958. Six years later, it was redesignated for the 122nd Maintenance Battalion and was not changed for nearly a quarter century. It was redesignated for the last time on 1 May 1987 for the 122nd Support Battalion and is today worn by personnel of the 122nd Aviation Support Battalion.

Atlas, the Titan whose punishment for being on the losing side of the Battle of the Gods in Greek mythology is to hold up the celestial heavens for eternity, symbolizes the maintenance functions of the 122nd Support Battalion back when its main focus was on Armored vehicles, the heaviest land vehicles at the time. The motto “Maintien Le Droit” is a French phrase meaning “Support The Right,” another reference to the Maintenance mission of the organization and its original mission of Armored support.

The battle honors of the 122nd Support Battalion include five World War II campaigns in the European Theater (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe) and two campaigns from Southwest Asia (Defense of Saudi Arabia, Liberation and Defense of Kuwait). As of Summer 2023, the unit is designated as the 122nd Aviation Support Battalion. It is assigned to the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade and is stationed at Fort Liberty (formerly known as Fort Bragg) in eastern North Carolina.
