The 129th Signal Battalion was organized on 1 July 1986 from new and existing units in the Virginia Army National Guard under that designation and with its Headquarters at Pikesville, Maryland. It was reorganized in March 1990 to exist in only the Maryland Army National Guard. Although the unit holds no Battalion-wide battle honors or decorations, its Company B is entitled to display an uninscribed World War I campaign streamers and four campaign streamers from World War II (with an Arrowhead device assault-campaign participation at Normandy). It was also the recipient of a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for the Normandy beach landing.
The 129th Signal Battalion was deactivated as a battalion in 2004 due to mandated force structure changes and then reconstituted as a company part of the 29th Division Headquarters Battalion with elements in Pikesville, MD.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.“Light The Fires,” the unit motto of the 129th Signal Battalion see on its Distinctive Unit Insignia, is a reference to an historical method of transmitting military communications and is reinforced by the image of a torch in the middle of the insignia. Two lightning torches emphasize the speed at which modern electronic communications are sent and received.
