U.S. ARMY 138TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 138th Field Artillery Brigade is a symbol of the unit’s heritage and mission. Also referred to as a unit crest, this DUI was originally implemented for the 138th Artillery Group in 1971, but was quickly redesignated the following year when the unit’s designation changed to the 138th Field Artillery Group in 1972. When the Group became the 138th Field Artillery Brigade in 1978, the crest was redesignated for the unit once more.

Scarlet and yellow, the most prominent colors on the crest, are those used to designate Artillery units. The two centerpieces of the crest are the gunner’s quadrant and cannon, symbolizing the controlled firepower at the Brigade’s disposal and recalling its overall mission; the cannon is also a traditional symbol used in the heraldry for Artillery units. Beneath the cannon is a field of blue grass, a reference to the Brigade's home state of Kentucky and inspiration for the unit's official nickname "Bluegrass Brigade."

For almost seventy years, the 138th Field Artillery Brigade has lived up to the unit motto, "Ready In Peace And War," with ceaseless service in its home state of Kentucky, making it very hard to imagine any other Kentucky Army National Guard unit more deserving of the nickname "Blue Grass Brigade." Its most recent appearance in the news came in August 2023 with the announcement that the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 138th Field Artillery Brigade was deploying to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Spartan Shield.
