Frequently called a “unit crest,” the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI)of the 194th Engineer Brigade (Theater Army) was approved for wear on 11 April 1974. The insignia is chock-a-block with visual representations of tools used by designers and engineers, including a T-square, a compass, dividers, and a spade; the red spade handle also simulates the initial “T” for the Brigade’s home state of Tennessee. These are all superimposed on a tower, symbolic of the Brigade’s Engineer mission and appropriately colored red. “Integrity And Initiative” describe the principles guiding the work of the Brigade and serve as unit motto.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
