U.S. ARMY 198TH ARMOR REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 198th Armor Regiment, Mississippi Army National Guard was originally approved on 7 December 1951 for the 198th Tank Battalion, Mississippi National Guard. It was redesignated for the 198th Armor Regiment, Mississippi Army National Guard on 13 June 1962. The unit’s affiliation with the Armor branch is denoted by the yellow (gold) shield and the yellow background on which the un/it motto “We Came To Fight” is inscribed. A red chevronel pointing upward and the dragon’s head—an image used frequently in the heraldry of Armor units—suggest both the Regiment’s aggressive tactics and its Armored equipment.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Since a 2006 reorganization, the 198th Armor Regiment has consisted solely of the 2nd Battalion, 155th Armored Brigade combat. The Regiment’s origins can be traced to the constitution of the 198th Armor, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental system (CARS), on 28 April 1959 in the Mississippi Army National Guard. It was organized on 1 May 1959 to consist of the Philadelphia-based 1st Medium Tank Battalion (redesignated from the 2nd Battalion, 108th Armored Cavalry) and the 2nd Reconnaissance Squadron (redesignated from the 750th Tank Battalion.

Over the decades, the Regiment has undergone several reorganizations affecting its makeup—in February 1968 it was reorganized to consist of two battalions that were elements of the 30th Armored Division, for example—and in 1989 was withdrawn from CARS and reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System. It received its current designation as the 198th Armor Regiment on 1 October 2005, and as mentioned earlier it was reorganized to comprise just the 2nd Battalion in 2006.

Because of its relatively recent creation, the Regiment has no official battle honors (although its campaign participation in War On Terrorism is yet to be determined), but the units that were used to form today’s HQ Company, 2nd Battalion brought its previously earned campaign credits with it: an uninscribed World War I Victory streamer and four campaigns from World War II, along with a Meritorious Unit Commendation inscribed ALCAN HIGHWAY (for Alaska-Canadian Highway).

The 2nd Battalion, 189th Armor Regiment is headquartered in Senatobia, Mississippi and has been ordered into active Federal service at least twice since July 2004.
