1984TH U.S. ARMY HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

Approved on 2 May 1989, the 1984th U.S. Army Hospital Distinctive Unit Insignia—better known as a DUI or a “unit crest—features a shield rendered entirely in maroon and white, colors of the Army Medical Department. The maroon cross is a standard image on the insignia of Medical Department units, as is the single serpent entwined around a staff (“Staff of Aesculapius” or “Rod of Asclepius”).

Behind the cross is a snow-capped mountain, a stylized representation of Denali—the peak once officially known as Mount McKinley—the highest peak not only in the unit’s home state of Alaska, but also in all 50 States or any of the country’s territories. Branches of green spruce, the state tree of Alaska, denote good health, hope, and growth. “More Than Care,” the unit motto, points to the medical assistance the unit provides that is coupled with compassion and care.

A unit in the U.S. Army Reserve, the 1984th U.S. Army Hospital is assigned to the 9th Mission Support Command. It controls three Medical Detachments and is headquartered at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
