The 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade was activated in 2007 as the 1st Sustainment Brigade; prior to that time, it had been designated as 1st Infantry Division Support Command. Its close association with the 1st Infantry Division was reflected in its Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Former Wartime Service patch, with an upright and unsheathed sword recalling the “1” of the famed “Big Red One” patch. Its support role is symbolized by an inverted chevron that has the appearance of the letter “V,” bringing to mind the unit motto “Sustain to Victory.
But in 2015 members of the brigade had to remove this patch from their left sleeves to reflect their new designation as an organic component of the 1st Infantry Division, i.e., the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade. However, members of the brigade who had served in combat are allowed to wear this insignia as a Former Wartime Service patch on the right sleeve of the Army Combat Uniform, and the color patch can still be worn by veterans who choose to wear the Class A Army Green service uniform.
