Better known as a unit crest or a DUI, the 209th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was authorized on 24 August 1999. A torch in the center symbolizes knowledge and leadership, key aspects of the unit’s training mission. The chevron behind the torch indicates support for all branches of the military, while the wavy bars at the base of the shield represent the unit’s location Lincoln, Nebraska, a city encompassed by several springs and creeks that attracted early settlers to the region. The organization’s ultimate goal is encapsulated in the unit motto “Excellence Through Knowledge.”
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
