U.S. ARMY 20TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The motto of “Building Combat Power” is brought to artistic life in the symbolism of the 20th Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia. Two chevrons, typically emblems of authority when employed on insignias, are intertwined to create the appearance of a pair of carpenters’ squares and placed over a sword, a symbol of the combat aspect of the brigade’s mission. Just as in the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia - Military Operations in Hostile Conditions insignia (SSS - MOHC), the scarlet and white colors associated with the Corps of Engineers make up the focal point of the image, in this case forming a heraldic saltire—a diagonal cross that denotes support and which is also used to represent Brigades on military maps.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

As of Autumn 2023, the 20th Engineer Brigade is an active Combat Engineer Brigade assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps and stationed at Fort Liberty (formerly known as Fort Bragg) in North Carolina. In addition to its HQ and HQ Company, it consists of four Engineer Battalions headquartered in the Eastern United States: the 19th (Fort Knox, Kentucky), the 27th (Fort Liberty), the 46th (Fort Johns, formerly Fort Polk, in Louisiana), and the 92nd (Fort Stewart, Georgia).
