Headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, the 20th Support Command, now referred to as 20th Support Command (CBRNE) or 20th CBRNE Command, was activated on 16 October 2004 to provide enhanced response to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive events in support of both military operations and civilian authorities. Subordinate elements of the Command include the 48th Chemical Brigade; 52nd Ordnance Group (EOD); 71st Ordnance Group (EOD); CARA (CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity); 1st Area Medical Laboratory; and the Army Reserve Consequence Management Unit.
Approved for wear on 5 April 2005, the 20th Support Command Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, uses five stars to denote the five types of threats the Command deals with. A flaming sword symbolizes the aggressive, pro-active stance our country takes against domestic and international terrorists who might resort to one of these types of weapons. The green background is an allusion to the Army’s role as a land force, while the black border was chosen in memory of the personnel who died on September 11, 2001.
