U.S. ARMY 229TH AVIATION REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 229th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was originally approved for the 229th Aviation Battalion on 6 April 1966. Its description was revised when it was redesignated for the 299th Aviation Regiment on 21 July 1989. Each of the charges on the shield portion refers to a characteristic of the unit: a wing alludes to flight, the arrowhead beside it denotes accuracy, the flash epitomizes speed and swiftness, and the sword is for combat, reinforcing the unit motto of “Winged Assault.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
