The 22nd Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, informally referred to as a unit crest or DUI, was approved on 8 May 1923. Its two primary colors, white and blue, reflect the old and new Infantry colors, respectively. An embattled line across the center represents the wars in which the Regiment had fought up to that point. Five crossed arrows in the upper half of the insignia recall the five campaigns the Regiment fought in during the Indian Wars, and the “sun in splendor” is the Katipunan device that was a symbol of Philippine revolutionaries during the Philippine Insurrection.Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Constituted on 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as the 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, the 22nd Infantry Regiment did not receive that designation until after the Civil War (21 September 1866). It was organized as the 22nd Infantry, a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System, in 1957 but was withdrawn from it in 1988 and reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System in 1988.
Since it was formed, the 22nd Infantry Regiment has taken part in almost every major conflict in which the United States has found itself engaged, including the Indian Wars, War with Spain, Philippine Insurrection, World War II, Vietnam, and the War on Terrorism; it was also deployed for the Armed Forces Expedition in Somalia in 1993.
Adopting the motto “Deeds Not Words” at the same time its Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved, the Regiment’s dedication to duty has been rewarded over the years with four Presidential Unit Citations, four Valorous Unit Awards, a Belgian Fourragere 1940, and a citation in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army.
Of the four battalions formed as part of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, only the 2nd Battalion remains active. It is assigned to the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division and is based at Fort Drum, New York.
