The 235th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or unit crest, was originally approved for the 135th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion on 16 July 1952. It has been redesignated twice since that time, first on 3 April 1961 for the 235th Artillery Regiment and again on 25 July 1997, the latter with revised description and symbolism. A shield in black and red pays commemorates the service of the organization while it was an Artillery regiment, with black denoting the unit’s origins as a Tank Destroyer unit (635th Tank Destroyer Battalion); red is the color of Artillery. Two gun muzzles pointed skyward allude to Antiaircraft Artillery, and the fleur-de-lis indicates service in Europe during World War II. The pheon below the muzzles is for the unit’s participation in an assault landing at Normandy. “Meet Our Thunder,” the unit motto, also recalls Artillery service.Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
