The 244th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was approved with an effective date of 1 October 1987. Its focal point is a saltire, or “x” shape, on the shield portion of the insignia featuring counterchanged ultramarine blue and golden orange; the shape suggests the Southern heritage of the Regiment (it was constituted in the Georgia and Louisiana Army National Guard in October 1987), while the colors are those assigned to Aviation units.
Counterchanged (alternating) colors are utilized to symbolize the flexibility of the organization and the role it plays in today’s Army for total preparedness. Resting on the saltire is a propeller pointing in four different compass directions, an allusion to worldwide Aviation capabilities and the unit’s ability to readily respond in response to all contingencies, a function that is re-emphasized by the motto “Ready Response.Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Comprising a single Battalion when it was organized in October 1987, the 244th Aviation Regiment underwent several reorganizations over the years that primarily determined the number of Battalions the Regiment is allotted. It has been called into active Federal service several times since the launch of the War on Terrorism, including in December 2003 (Iraq), April 2008 (Iraq), January 2013, October 2017 (Kuwait), and February 2019 (Iraq and Kuwait). As of Autumn 2023, both its 1st and 2nd Battalion are based in Louisiana, with the 1st Battalion (Assault Helicopter) stationed at Hammond Northshore Regional Airport and the 2nd Battalion (General Support) at Esler Airfield near Pineville, Louisiana.
