Officially known as a Distinctive Unit Insignia or DUI for short, is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of HQ and HQ Company, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division was originally approved on 21 April 1965. It was subsequently amended on 18 May 1972 to correct the nickname of the 25th Infantry Division in the symbolism
A red and gold lightning flash, the most prominent image in the insignia, is adapted from the lightning flash found on the Division’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, but here it has been flipped horizontally and the upper portion colored scarlet. The lightning flash was created from the unit’s nickname of “Tropic Lightning,” used to describe how quickly the unit achieved mission goals.
The two enclosing palm branches also allude to that nickname, while the erupting volcano upon which the lightning flash has been superimposed is a reference state of Hawaii, known for several active volcanoes. The 3 denotes the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
