Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Since the approval of the 27th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia while the unit was designated as the 27th Field Artillery Regiment, Regular Army Inactive on 28 May 1935, the insignia has been redesignated for the 27th Field Artillery Battalion (Armored) in September 1940, 27th Constabulary Squadron in December 1946, 27th Armored Field Artillery Battalion in September 1952, 27th Artillery Regiment in December 1957, and 27th Field Artillery Regiment in December 1971. (Note this doesn’t count an amendment to the title to correct the unit designation to 27th Field Artillery Battalion in November 1940.)
What makes this ironic is that the insignia design of a bend fracted (two offset diagonal bars) is to visually portray just one event in the unit’s history: the break that came between its demobilization on 8 February 1919 at Camp McClellan, Alabama and its reconstitution on 24 March 1923. The motto, CONUNCTI STAMUS, is Latin for we “United We Stand.”
The Regiment has obviously had some organizational challenges over the decades, but this has not deterred it from achieving excellence when it has been called to service. During World War II, the Regiment fought in seven campaigns, from the first American action in North Africa in Algeria-French Morocco (it earned an Arrowhead device for taking part in the assault landings) to the brutal campaigning in Italy in the Anzio, Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley campaigns. It was also awarded a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for its actions in Central Italy.
Its service in Vietnam stretched to a dozen campaigns, where it was awarded two Valorous Unit Awards and four Meritorious Unit Commendations. During the First Gulf War, the Regiment was there from start to finish, earning another Meritorious Unit Commendation while taking part in all three campaigns. Its honors in the War on Terrorism include a Presidential Unit Citation from the Navy for its work in the opening stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2011.
