A brigade-level command in the Kansas Army National Guard, the 287th Sustainment Brigade was activated on 1 September 2005 with its headquarters in Wichita. Tasked with the planning, preparation, execution, and assessment of combat service support operations within the Area of Operations assigned to a Corps or Division, it was the largest Brigade headquarters in the state. The Brigade’s sole deployment came in 2008 – 2009 when it supported Coalition troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was inactivated on 1 May 2016.
The light blue and crimson coloration of the 287th Sustainment Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia is a reference to the Brigade’s association with Maintenance, while the black and white of the compass rose are an allusion to night-and-day, round-the-clock vigilance. A gold-colored archer represents the fighting spirit of native Kansans and their determination to defend American liberties. The compass rose’s ability to guide in any direction indicates the ability and willingness to deploy anywhere around the globe; the main points on the compass symbolize various mission elements such as Supply, Medicine, Maintenance, and Transportation.
