U.S. ARMY 299TH CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 299th Cavalry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a DUI or a unit crest, was first approved for the 299th Infantry Regiment on 4 May 1936. It was amended on 7 December 1967 to correct the blazon (heraldic term for a complete and highly detailed version of a coat of arms or insignia) and subsequently was redesignated for the 299th Cavalry Regiment with updated description and symbolism) with a retroactive date of 1 September 2007.

White and blue, the two colors used for Infantry in the history of the U.S. Army, are used for the shield portion of the 299th Cavalry Regiment to reflect the fact that not only was the unit originally designated as Infantry, but also has served as an Infantry unit for the overwhelming majority of its service life. The sawtooth-style partition simulates the rough, choppy waves of the Pacific Ocean, and the red feather war helmet is a uniquely Hawaiian charge (image). E MAKAALA KAKOU is an Hawaiian phrase that translates in English as “Let’s Be Alert.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted on 27 January 1893 in the Hawaii National Guard as the 1st Regiment, the 299th Cavalry Regiment’s lineage includes a half-dozen reorganizations and an equal number of redesignations. Even so, it was not until 2007, in fact, that it became a Cavalry unit through the redesignation of the 299th Infantry Regiment. During World War II, the unit was designated as the 298th Infantry and was assigned to both the 25th and 24th Infantry Divisions for brief periods before it was relieved from assignment to the latter. By war’s end, some elements of the Regiment—enough to earn campaign credit for the entirety of the unit—had taken part in five campaigns in the Pacific Theater and earned a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

During War on Terrorism, the Regiment’s units were deployed in both Infantry and Cavalry roles, and in 2013 the outstanding performance of the Headquarter and Headquarters Troop of the 1st Squadron, 299th Cavalry Regiment was recognized with the award of a Meritorious Unit Commendation. Between December 2008 and August 2008, the HHT was responsible for the command and control of more than three dozen convoy escort teams, carrying out gun-truck support during more than 500 Combat Logistic Patrols while providing maintenance support for vehicles, medical support for convoy-escort missions, and a convoy-escort team to reinforce Convoy Security Companies.

As of January 2023, the 299th Cavalry Regiment consists of a single Squadron, the 1st, allotted to the Hawaii Army National Guard and headquartered at Hilo on the big island of Hawaii.
